Infection Preventionist

Infection Preventionist connects the science of infection prevention and control to people: patients, visitors, and all healthcare workers, as they interact with each other in their immediate environment and in the community.

Leads the Health System’s Infection Prevention/Control program to implement evidence-based practices and safety initiatives for Healthcare-associated Infection (HAI) prevention.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following:

  • Disseminates education and instruction to all healthcare workers regarding appropriate infection prevention and control measures needed to identify sources of potential infection, limit transmission and promote a culture of safety for all.
  • Supports the health system’s quality improvement program, structure and activities by providing education, data generation and analysis of key quality indicators.
  • Reviews pertinent literature to remain current on practice recommendations, accreditation standards, state and federal regulations, epidemiologic methods and trends, public health policy and current surveillance methods.
  • Develops systems for identifying, investigating, reporting and preventing spread of infections and communicable diseases among patients, visitors and healthcare workers.
  • Annually, and as needed, updates and/or reviews the health system’s infection Prevention and Control policies and procedures including those pertinent from other departments e.g. sterile processing, environmental services, dietary.
  • Meets reporting requirements established by public health at the federal, state and county level, including Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) condition of participations, accreditation standards, and medical/legal items related to infection prevention and control healthcare data and issues.
  • Tracks pertinent quality indicators as identified by Quality and Infection Control (IC) committees as well as local, regional and federal agencies using standardized methodology.
  • Analyzes, interprets and presents data statistically or in other meaningful ways to key stakeholders including the IC Committee, Medical Staff Quality Committee and other medical staff or hospital committees as needed.
  • Compares laboratory reports with county public health’s communicable diseases list to identify conditions that require reporting to local public health authority.
  • Participates in antimicrobial stewardship program efforts to support appropriate antibiotic usage.
  • Advises and consults with physicians and other healthcare workers about standard and transmission-based precautions needed to protect all from possible contamination or infection.
  • Investigates infection prevention and control events/problems and communicates with appropriate entities regarding follow-up care when potential exposure to a communicable disease occurs.
  • Collaborates with Employee Health Services, public health and IC medical director to manage communicable disease exposures.
  • Participates in hospital-wide orientation and in-service education programs, using adult learning principles.
  • Interacts with interagency contacts on infectious and communicable disease awareness, prevention including Emergency Preparedness related to bio-terrorism preparedness and response involving potential or known infectious agents.
  • Collaborates with key stakeholders to ensure that infection outbreaks are minimized or eliminated in order to resolve harm and mitigate financial impact to hospital district.
  • Conducts other duties as assigned: e.g. community outreach, first responder annual updates on bloodborne pathogens, aerosol transmissible diseases, immunity to vaccine-preventable diseases, mentoring of others to support the infection prevention and control function.
  • Demonstrates Health System Values in performance and behavior.
  • Complies with Health System policies and procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from four-year College or University; or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Three to five years Infection Control related activities. Microbiology background required. Previous experience in teaching, curriculum development & instruction design.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS: Required: Current RN license with BSN preferred, or Masters in Public Health (MPH), or certified Medical Technologist, or a bachelor’s degree in microbiology or epidemiology. Preferred: Certified Infection Control Practitioner-CIC

OTHER EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS: Completion of Association for Practitioners in Infection Control (APIC) training course or equivalent desired
