Director-Pharmacy Services (Job Opening 429116) - Scope of Position

Under the direction of the Administrator, Pharmacy Services, this position leads and manages services across the pharmacy enterprise. The pharmacy enterprise consists of the following: Inpatient and outpatient areas of University Hospital, Ross Heart Hospital, University Hospital East, James Cancer Hospital, Harding Hospital, Brain and Spine Hospital, and Dodd Davis Rehabilitation Hospital. OSU Physician Group and The Ohio State Outpatient Pharmacy are also considered part of the pharmacy enterprise. The pharmacy enterprise employs over 400 FTEs, dispenses nearly 9M doses annually, and generates $1.2B in revenue based on a $260M drug budget. The pharmacy enterprise has a close affiliation with all of the health sciences colleges, most importantly the college of pharmacy where 15 pharmacy staff has faculty appointments. The pharmacy enterprise contributes to the academic and research mission of the university by training yearly almost 30 residents, publishing 42 peer-reviewed papers, and precepting nearly 10,000 pharmacy student hours of experiential education.

Position Summary

This position facilitates the implementation and maintenance of an enterprise-wide pharmacy practice model. This pharmacy practice model is guided by the Ohio Board of Pharmacy Practice Act (OAC4729-5). Specific deliverables include successful implementation and standardization of pharmacist activities under the pharmacist consult agreement, maintain a contemporary pharmacist consult agreement, develop quality and cost metrics for direct patient care services, monitoring pharmacist productivity and developing a sustainable care team For purposes of this job description, direct patient care services refers to the following activities: patient care rounding, order verification, collaborative drug therapy management under a consult agreement, and educating patients, healthcare professionals, and students.

This position can be further summarized as follows:

  • Ensures the pharmacy practice model is continuously evaluated and improved using the best medical evidence and current quality improvement methods (i.e.: Six Sigma or Lean);
  • Centralizes and consolidates patient care services where appropriate;
  • Develop, implement, and monitor strategies for measuring pharmacy practice model productivity and workload;
  • Ensures continued compliance with all national, state and local regulations related to pharmacist activities in direct patient care;
  • Supports the Ohio State University?s research and education missions

Education and Experience

This position must be a licensed pharmacist in good standing with the Ohio Board of Pharmacy. In addition, the position must have at least 5 years of experience in pharmacy leadership. A B.Sc. in Pharmacy, or Doctor of Pharmacy degree (PharmD) and an advanced administrative degree (M.S., MHA, MPH, MBA) is required. Post-graduate residency training is preferred. In addition significant track record in scholarship and teaching are preferred.
