SEARHC was established in 1975 under the provisions of the Indian Self-Determination Act as a non-profit health consortium which serves the health interests of the residents of Southeast Alaska. The intent of this legislation was to have Indian Health Service programs and facilities turned over to tribal management. Our contracting with IHS began in 1976 when we took over management of the Community Health Aides Program. In 1982, we took over operation of the IHS Juneau clinic, now the Ethel Lund Medical Center, and took over operation of Sitka’s Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital in 1986. We are one of the oldest and largest Native-run health organizations in the nation.

The Ethel Lund Medical Center, Juneau, Alaska (population 32,000) is seeking a people with the passion and skills to work on a high quality team to deliver outstanding results to the patients we serve. Position Summary:

Responsible for maintaining a formal comprehensive diabetes education program encompassing medical/clinical providers, physical therapist, mental health practitioners, health educators, and monitoring equipment which will provide eligible patients with the tools and support from Mt. Edgecumbe to self manage their diabetes thus reducing chronic care costs.

Position Complexities:

The responsibility of this position is to educate, coordinate, and monitor patients with diabetes and related chronic diseases through participation in a multi-disciplinary team of Health Care Professionals from a variety of settings within the Consortium.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provides professional nursing care, education and case management to people with diabetes, prediabetes and gestational diabetes. Maintains the Mt. Edgecumbe (which include: Sitka, Kake, Hoonah, Angoon, Yakutat, Skagway, Pelican and Tenakee Springs) diabetes registries for people with diabetes, prediabetes and gestational diabetes.
  • Ensures all patients receive annual exams, laboratory tests, immunizations and education as recommended by IHS Standards of Care for Adults with Type 2 Diabetes (found on the SEARHC intranet medical pages).
  • Coordinates primary and secondary prevention goals for patients with diabetes through active participation with the SEARHC Consortium Diabetes team.
  • Coordinators the completion of the annual IHS Diabetes Audit. Utilizes the audit data, other reports and RPMS tools to provide the highest quality of care.
  • Facilitates the education and implementation of the IHS Standards of Care for Adults with Type 2 Diabetes to medical providers, dietitians, nursing and other related personnel through education programs and direct training.

Duty/Responsibility

Supports and role models the SEARHC Seven Standards of Excellence. This includes: answering inquiries of a general nature by nursing staff, provider staff, other departments, visitors and patients, assisting them in a friendly and cooperative manner; receive and relaying messages to personnel and uses proper telephone etiquette.

Baseline Qualification Requirements:

  • A valid, current, full and unrestricted RN license in the State of Alaska>br /> OR
  • A valid, current, RD license in the State of Alaska
  • Three years general nursing or dietetic experience.
  • Able to travel to island communities per program requirements.
  • Certification as a Diabetic Educator or eligible to apply for certification within two years.
  • Preferred, one year work experience in diabetic care and management.
