Summary of Position
The Health Department’s Public Health (PH) Bureau is seeking to fill a fulltime Supervising Public Health Nurse position in the Tuberculosis (TB) Unit of PH’s Communicable Disease Prevention and Control program.
The Supervising Public Health Nurse (SPHN) coordinates and supervises the operation of health-related services and programs involving comprehensive case management, education, prevention, and collaboration with and coordination of community resources. These services are delivered by a team of professional, para-professional and support staff that collaborate to ensure comprehensive health services are provided throughout Monterey County. The supervisor uses principles of reflective practice and staff development to provide primary support and appropriate oversight to the nurse home visitors to build and model a strengths-based client-centered culture. These programs include:
Tuberculosis (TB)/Communicable Disease Unit (CDU) SPHN: TB has the primary responsibility to provide early intervention, prevent TB transmission, coordinate patient care to ensure an adequate course of treatment is followed, and identify and address other urgent medical and psychosocial needs through appropriate utilization of resources. The TB program administers the Directly Observed Therapy program in Monterey County. CDU provides communicable disease prevention and control services for all Monterey County residents. Program activities include conducting detailed interviews, collecting biological specimens, delivering health education, linking clients to treatment and/or preventative services, and providing guidance to medical providers, schools and congregate living facilities on screening, treatment and infection control practices.

The knowledge, skills and abilities listed above may be acquired through various types of experience, education or training, typically:
Education: Completion of coursework leading to a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health Nursing which included courses in the principles of supervision and administration and Supervising Public Health Nurse
Experience: Two years of progressively responsible professional public health program experience which include lead-worker level responsibilities, and which provide a broad knowledge of public health programs.
