The Building Bridges Project will prevent suicide and suicide attempts among American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) adults age 25 and older to reduce the overall suicide rate and number of suicides in the Fairbanks North Star Borough (FNSB). Building Bridges will build the systems to culturally bridge the service gaps to integrate critical components of the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention and the Tribal Behavioral Health Agenda.

Candidate will be responsible for the screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT) using protocols for rapid service access for those who have attempted suicide. The SBIRT Specialist will be responsible for coordinating and facilitating program design and implementation the SBIRT across self-selected primary care agencies. Screening can take place after discharge from Emergency Care and at Fairbanks Native Association.


  • Conducts Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) to AI/AN adults (ages 25 and older) in the FNSB
  • Implements evidence-based screening tools
  • Collectively resolves challenges with SBIRT results with Implementation Specialist
  • Establishes protocols for project use of SBIRT activities for high risk adults in Behavioral Health settings
  • Responds to questions on a variety of issues related to SBRT practices by staff, consumers, and external stakeholders
  • Participate in suicide screening during initial assessment for all adults in FNA’s outpatient and residential centers at intake so that suicide prevention will become an integral part of the treatment plan
  • Collaborates and makes recommendations with FNA treatment programs in placement committee meetings
  • Implements lethal means prevention protocol and incorporates them as goals in care or treatment plans
  • Provides feedback to Gatekeepers regarding associated risk levels
  • Assist Implementation Specialist in training of staff on SBIRT services which are to be operational by month 4 of the project
  • Ensures SBIRT is integrated into the electronic health record (MIS), enters data and bills for services
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned


  • Knowledge of substance abuse and mental health; and appropriate skills in working with consumers with Mental Health/Substance Use disorders
  • Knowledge of human resources policies and procedures
  • Skill in working successfully with the Alaska Native/American Indian population and experience providing culturally specific programming; understanding of and sensitivity to diverse cultures and lifestyles

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education & Experience)

  • Bachelor degree or related four (4) years’ experience
  • Minimum (3) years’ experience in behavioral health
  • Experience working with Alaska Native/American Indian population and experience providing culturally specific services
  • Documented SBIRT experience
  • Documented responsibility for providing trauma informed service


  • Master’s degree in Human Services or related field
  • Experience serving Fairbanks and/or FNSB census area

This position corresponds to medium work, involving physical exertion of 20-50 lbs. frequently; such exertion involves the lifting and/or moving of young children in the program, and/or goods and materials within the facility. There is frequent walking, standing, climbing, stooping, bending, and squatting/crouching. The majority of work is performed in a classroom setting with a wide variety of people with differing functions, personalities, and abilities. The office is a non-smoking facility with outside smoking areas. May involve local travel between various program components of FNA and home visits where exposure to extreme weather conditions are likely. Works in an environment where protection of client confidentiality is essential. Position requires cleaning the class area every day, including putting supplies in proper space, cleaning and sanitizing surfaces with bleach solution to disinfect. Personal Protective Equipment will be provided where/when needed.


Supervision Received:

Position receives direct supervision from immediate supervisor; however, incumbent is expected to effectively perform day-to-day activity as denoted within job description. Work will be monitored through weekly meetings, monthly reports, and regular communication with your supervisor. General guidelines for operations are based on program requirements and the general policies and procedures of FNA.

Position Impact:

Impact at the program level is high. Program’s level of compliance with program standards is directly affected by the effective performance of duties, especially as they relate to providing program services.

Per FNA’s automotive insurance policy, in order to drive a FNA-owned vehicle, an individual must be at least 21 years of age. In order to drive a FNA-owned vehicle with consumers in the vehicle, an individual must be at least 25 years of age. No employee may transport a FNA consumer in a personal vehicle.

Continued employment status will be contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal background investigation and the pre-employment drug testing process. Where required, continued employment status (post job offer) will be contingent upon employee providing certification of annual tuberculosis (TB) screening and medical certification that employee does not, because of infectious or communicable disease, pose a direct threat or significant risk to the health and safety of program participants or others in the workplace.
