The Risk Manager has broad responsibility for the protection of the institution and its staff from fortuitous loss. This Risk Manager advises and consults with senior leadership on potential sources of loss and makes recommendations on how to eliminate or minimize loss. An experienced, motivated and independently minded healthcare Risk Manager who is able to act on their own initiative, adopting a value led ‘can do’ leadership style within a climate of constant change and uncertainty. Provide leadership and advice in the implementation of the organization wide risk management strategies and programs which ensures quality, safety and risk management is embedded throughout the organization.
Oversight, facilitation, coordination, supervision and technical competence to lead the hospital system risk management program and processes.
Provide hospital leadership support, advice and guidance on all aspects of risk management and event reporting. Oversee event reporting and support Leaders/managers in responding to event reports. Support and model an environment of non-retaliation for reporting.
Supports Compliance Officer with quality and regulatory compliance, including the complaint and adverse event management programs. Coordinate, facilitate and document Comprehensive System Analysis (RCA) when needed.
Advocate and sponsor risk control and prevention strategies that will integrate risk management into everyday management.
The Risk Manager will be responsible for overseeing insurance purchasing in collaboration with Chief Financial Officer. Plan and coordinate a comprehensive insurance program involving such activities as insurance purchasing, insurance consulting, and claims coordination.
Develop and support systems and processes for event management including investigation, communication and escalation of serious incidents (internally and to external agencies).
Work with legal team/council on pending and active litigations. Coordinate with legal team and staff for depositions, subpoenas, and court appearances.
Ensures a proactive approach to event management, using appropriate technology applications, across the Hospital with consistent application of the Event Management Policies through monitoring of event management activity system and processes. This will involve implementation of the Event Management Plan, Policy and any necessary guidance to leadership.
In collaboration with the Compliance Officer and Department leaders, the Risk Manager will review policies and provide guidance/edits based on compliance and risk mitigation. Will assist with organizational Policy Management through software.
Tracking implementation of major reports/investigations recommendations.
Sharing of learning across the organization through a defined process, including a comprehensive system-wide orientation program to risk mitigation.
Identify and develop with Human Resources methods to reduce employee fatigue; absenteeism/presenteeism.
Advise senior leadership on mitigation strategy for risk inherent in the following areas: ad campaigns; physician recruitment, mergers/acquisitions; hospital status changes (e.g. critical access); new clinical programs and new construction.
Preparation of risk and event activity and assurance reports to Compliance Officer for presentation to the Board.
Assist compliance department as necessary with investigations and legal research.
Keep up to date with health & safety legislation and guidelines and advise Hospital management on legislative developments which may affect safety, health and welfare at work.
Current New Mexico RN license preferred.
Will consider 5+ years’ experience as Risk Manager in lieu of RN license.
Certification in Healthcare Risk Management preferred.
Experience in Risk Management
Minimum 5 years clinical or hospital operations experience preferred
Excellent computer skills (MS Word/ Excel/ Power Point/ Meditech)
Experience with data analysis and reporting preferred
Ability to communicate effectively with Providers
