The Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Paramedic, is responsible for direct patient care of Substance Use Disorder patients who are in-patient in Crossing Recovery Center Detox unit following Physician instructions and will be knowledgeable about Substance Use Disorders and follow evidence-based guidelines for monitoring patients who are detoxing.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assists patients to exam room or assigned patient room
  • Admits patients, takes vital signs, height, weight, blood pressure and other measurements as applicable
  • Assesses, recognizes and responds to emergencies
  • Triages incoming phone calls screening patients inquiring about services or routing to other extensions as necessary
  • Informs patient of patient rights and orients patient to unit
  • Obtains and records patient information and history in electronic medical record
  • Performs phlebotomy, collects and processes specimens as ordered
  • Obtains current medication list from patient and verifies with pharmacy
  • Ensures that all medications are properly stored following departmental policies and manufacturer’s guidelines
  • Prepares and administers oral and parental medications as ordered and within scope of practice
  • Performs COWS and or CIWAs as ordered and needed to assess patients in withdrawal
  • Performs CLIA – waived testing as ordered
  • Performs EKGs as ordered
  • Collects random drug screens for patients who have been instructed to leave specimens during outpatient clinic after business hours
  • Performs and documents point of care urine drug screens as ordered
  • Manages the care of patients in collaboration with other health professionals and members of the healthcare team in order to make decisions about treatment and attain health goals.
  • Follows provider orders and standing orders
  • Using established protocols, summons patients and prepares them to be seen by providers
  • Maintains inventory and restocking of medications and supplies
  • Maintains examination room, nursing station and equipment
  • Works closely with other staff members on the team to provide comprehensive quality care
  • Complies with quality assurance practices, risk management and safety procedures
  • Performs other duties, as required

Education and Experience:

  • Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Paramedic, must be a graduate of an approved school of nursing or EMT training
  • CPR certified
  • Currently licensed to practice in the State of Illinois
  • Two (2) years of successful experience in a clinical setting preferred
  • 40 hours of continuing education in substance use disorders required for LPN’s or Paramedics within 6 months of hire
