Our Surgical Services Department has an outstanding opportunity for a Nurse Manager who will provide leadership and coordination for the Operating Rooms. This Manager will facilitate, monitor and improve the processes and systems that impact daily patient flow and the quality of patient care delivered in the Surgical Services Department. They also are responsible for establishing and maintaining high customer service standards for the designated unit and the Surgical Services Department as a whole and will guide and direct the activities of the RN2’s, RN3's and others in the designated unit.

Summary:

Provides leadership and coordination for the Main OR, Surgical Pavillion OR and Roosevelt OR. Responsible for establishing and maintaining high customer service standards for the designated unit and the Surgical Services Department as a whole. Guides and directs the activities of the RN2’s, RN3's, Surg Techs, and Hospital Assistants in the designated unit.

Functions and Responsibilities:

1. HUMAN RESOURCES

1.1 Analyzes the staffing needs of the unit, 24/7. Collaborates with the Department Director and peers, to maintain an adequate volume of team members to meet the needs of the unit.
1.2 Responsible for making hiring, discipline and termination decisions related to team members.
1.3 Collaborates with peers and Department Director to develop and implement performance standards, competencies and performance evaluation criteria.
1.4 Monitors the activities of the RN2’s, RN3’s and other preceptors to ensure team members attain and maintain required skills, knowledge and competencies. Ensures all new team members receive a thorough, efficient, well-documented orientation to the department and assigned services.
1.5 Supervises the daily activities of the staff to ensure optimum performance, providing ongoing staff evaluation and performance feedback regarding job performance based on standards and expectations.
1.6 Conducts annual reviews of clinical competencies and document them in personnel files.
1.7 Completes annual personnel evaluations on all team members.
1.8 Identifies continuing education needs of staff and supports programs designed to meet those needs. Promotes personal growth and provides opportunities for staff to develop self-management skills.
1.9 Ensures completion of Annual Infection Control, Fire and Safety, OSHA, and other regulatory requirements and maintains department personnel files for team members in collaboration with the Operations Supervisor.
1.10 Mentors/coaches/assists team members with conflict resolution
1.11 Use communication systems on the unit to ensure staff have access to pertinent information
1.12 Provides the Operations Supervisor, with minimum staffing volume guidelines for the designated unit. The Operations Supervisor uses the guidelines when approving leaves and vacations for team members.
1.13 Collaborates with the Department Director and peers to assess OneStaff report data and implement changes in staffing policies as necessary.

2. SERVICE

2.1 Ensures that patients and family members are attended to in a professional manner.
2.2 Responsible for coordinating and directing staff, responding to the clinical needs of the patient/family members in a timely manner and maintains a professional and friendly demeanor at all times. As the leader on the Surgical Services team, assures that other members are responding in the same timely and professional manner.
2.3 Maintains hospital service standards, with particular attention to personal/behavioral, staff teamwork, and patient-staff interaction guidelines. Is a role model for, and facilitates, collaborative working relationships with surgeons and other teams.
2.4 Maintains an environment that respects age, culture, economic, ethnic and lifestyle differences of patients, visitors and staff. Uses assertiveness, negotiation, conflict management and problem solving strategies to develop a positive work environment
2.5 Works cohesively as a member of the Surgical Services Leadership Team, taking a proactive role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the unit.
2.6 Collaborates with surgical clinics, ancillary support services and other Patient Care and Ambulatory Care Services units to problem-solve, improve processes, and increase customer service and customer satisfaction.
2.7 Periodically assesses the satisfaction level of surgeons, anesthesia providers and other UWMC Patient Care and Ambulatory Care units, as related to patient flow processes. Takes corrective action where needed.

3. EQUIPMENT and SUPPLIES

3.1 Collaborates with Materials Management Department to maintain accurate, comprehensive inventory lists of all patient care items. Works closely with the Support Services Supervisor and unit staff members to identify new and replacement needs for equipment.
3.2 Works closely with the Supply Coordinator and Business Manager in obtaining information/planning for new products/technology; facilitating the introduction of new equipment/supplies.
3.3 Works closely with the other Nurse Managers and the Support Services Supervisor in conducting safe, effective clinical trials and evaluations of new equipment or forms.
3.4 Submits prioritized capital equipment lists to the Surgical Services Business Manager
3.5 Assertively communicates with Business Manager and Department Director if proposed delays in purchases have the potential to compromise the quality of patient care.
3.6 Coordinates unit specific in-services for specialty equipment and supplies.

4. QUALITY

4.1 Assesses/monitors the standards of practice/quality of care provided by team members. Educates or counsels when deficiencies in technique are noted.
4.2 Fosters clinical excellence and incorporation of clinical standards into staff practice. Uses coaching and counseling skills to enhance competent staff performance
4.3 Collaborates with the Department Director and peers to keep unit consistently ready to meet regulatory requirements, demonstrating knowledge of regulatory guidelines and ability to direct, lead and participate in unit quality programs.
4.4 Directs, leads and participates in quality improvement projects.
4.5 Member of Surgical Services Leadership Team (SSLT), and other UWMC Committees, as assigned.
4.6 Collaborates with the Department Director and peers on SSLT, to set and achieve annual goals for the Department.

5. OPERATIONS, DATA MANAGEMENT AND FINANCE

5.1 Contributes to the development of policies, procedures and systems to assure the effective operational functioning of the unit.
5.2 Works with peers and the Department Director to develop and maintain systems for collecting information to measure unit productivity.
5.3 Manages resources effectively and participates in cost savings initiatives.
5.4 Ensures maintenance of systems to protect confidentiality and integrity of patient records in compliance with hospital policies, procedures, and standards.

6. ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE SERVICE AREA AND THE ORGANIZATION

6.1 Supports the organizational and service area mission, philosophy, values and goals.
6.2 Directs and participates in efforts to continuously improve quality at UWMC.

6.8 Identifies and manages own and staff stress utilizing the support services of UWMC.
6.9 Directs and uses the service area and organizational communication systems to maintain knowledge of current information.
6.10 Ensures the maintenance of the service area environment and equipment so that it is of a professional appearance, safe and usable.
6.11 Ensures staff and own compliance with specific UWMC policies for safety.
6.12 Assures own and staff professional conduct and appearance.

8.1 Completes special projects. Develops and participates in projects to enhance operations.
8.2 Performs other duties, as assigned by Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

WA RN licensure; BSN, MA; minimum of 4 years as RN3 or equivalent and 4 years of Operating Room nursing experience required. Strong analytical, organizational, interpersonal and demonstrated customer service skills required. Master's in Nursing, or enrolled in a Master’s program other health care program strongly preferred.
