Vashon is a rural island of 10,000 people with an active arts and cultural community. It is easily accessible to Seattle, Tacoma and Kitsap Peninsula by ferry. Vashon Health Care District is a community-created, governmental entity. The District and its five member Board were created in November 2019 to ensure sustainable healthcare for island residents. The Superintendent is the chief administrative officer of the District and is responsible for the efficient administration of all affairs of the District. During the first year the Superintendent will lead the strategic and operational planning process of establishing a long-term primary healthcare provider for the island.

Job Description:

  • Oversee the search for a healthcare provider to establish and maintain primary care on the island
  • Be accountable for the planning and direction of clinical, financial, and operational activities that ensure high-quality and cost-effective care delivery
  • Perform periodic community needs assessment
  • Conduct research on issues raised by Commissioners
  • Prepare and present annual operating budget
  • Work with King County treasurer to oversee all business affairs including the disbursement of funds, recording of financial transactions, collection of accounts, and purchase and issue of supplies
  • Submit regular reports to the board regarding the health care services and financial activities of the District
  • Prepare agenda for and attend all board meetings, and participate in the discussion of matters being considered
  • Execute all contracts, agreements, and other documents and papers that the superintendent may be authorized to sign
  • Maintain stakeholder relationships and community engagement

This position will require 20-30 hours a week, but with a great deal of flexibility. Some, but not all of the work can be done remotely. Salary is competitive and negotiable depending on experience

Required skills and experience:

  • Management of complex projects with multiple stakeholders
  • Program development including needs assessment, partnership development, program design and evaluation
  • Leadership in startup efforts to meet community needs
  • Working knowledge of financial statements and public finance rules
  • Understanding of public records laws
  • Ability to develop, manage and administer budgets
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to manage conflict and facilitate collaboration
  • Demonstrated skill in negotiation
  • Experience supporting and/or serving on not for profit and public boards
  • Proficiency with MS Office programs
  • Undergraduate degree required with preference for advanced degree in relevant field or equivalent experience

Experience within healthcare organizations is preferred, but not required
