Monterey County Health Department's Behavioral Health Bureau seeks experienced behavioral health professionals to fill several vacancies at the Senior Psychiatric Social Worker level. The Bureau has Senior Psychiatric Social Worker vacancies on the Access/CalWORKS, Crisis and Quality Improvement Teams.

Access/CalWORKS

The Access/CalWORKS Senior Psychiatric Social worker (Sr. PSW) will be part of a team working closely with the Department of Social Services Employment Services Branch (DSS CWES). The Sr. PSW position requires a high level of collaboration and communication, knowledge of the DSS CWES Employment Assistance Programs (EAP) as well as the Access/CalWORKS program and should have a working knowledge of Domestic Violence Treatment and Resources. This position will receive referrals from DSS CWES staff for clients who are or have been victims of Domestic Violence. The Senior Psychiatric Social Worker will conduct risk assessments, diagnose, provide therapy and case management services.

Adult Forensic Services Team – Mental Health Diversion / Jail Liaison (Prop 47 funded)

The Senior PSW on the forensic team will work with Behavioral Health staff throughout Monterey County’s system of care as well as with justice partners in support of Mental Health Diversion implementation. The incumbent will serve a key role in jail coordination efforts and provide informational groups as part of planned in-reach efforts at the county jail to educate inmates on how to access Behavioral Health services and resources. Primary functions of the job may include triage, comprehensive assessment and treatment planning, referral, preparing court reports, testifying in court, individual counseling, case management and group facilitation. The overall goal is to provide opportunities for justice involved adults with behavioral health challenges to be linked with treatment for mental health and substance use disorders. The Senior PSW may handle more of the initial referrals and court reporting for MH Diversion eligibility. As Mental Health Diversion can be for a period of up to two years, tracking, coordination and collaboration with the assigned outpatient treatment team throughout the county will be critical.

Crisis Team

The Senior Psychiatric Social Worker on the Crisis Team works as the lead worker in the Emergency Department of Natividad Medical Center, assessing and diagnosing patients, having collateral contact with client caregivers to collect information and providing psycho-education, providing referrals to clients and families and responding to crisis phone calls. This Senior PSW in Crisis uses advanced skills and knowledge to bring forward ideas for better efficiency, client care, and partnership within and between teams.

Quality Improvement

The Senior Psychiatric Social Worker vacancy on the Quality Improvement team supports the utilization review for specialty mental health services and evaluates the quality of care delivered. This Senior Psychiatric Social Worker would be expected to use in-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements for specialty mental health and substance use disorder services and utilization reviews to determine the compliance of documentation with federal, state and local regulations, including Medi-Cal billing.

Other programs with Senior Psychiatric Social Worker positions are: Juvenile Court, Monterey County School District, Avanza Transition Age Youth. The Eligible List established by this recruitment may be used to fill current and future temporary or regular vacancies as they arise.

  • Work collectively with a multi-disciplinary team.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record or ability to provide suitable transportation approved by the appointing authority
  • The Health Department will conduct a thorough background and reference check process which include a Department of Justice fingerprint check. In accordance with HIPAA, incumbent must have applied for or have a National Provider Identifier (NPI)

Pursuant to Section 5751 of the Welfare and Institutions Code, possession of any one of the following:

  • Possession of a current Licensure either as a Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or a License as a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) or a License as a Clinical Psychologist (Ph.D) from the State of California issued by the California Board of Behavioral Science Examiners.
