Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) is an Alaska Native non-profit corporation that works toward meeting the health and social service needs of Tribal members and beneficiaries throughout the 235,000 square mile region in Interior Alaska (an area just slightly smaller than the state of Texas). Not only is TCC responsible for the healthcare delivery in villages throughout Interior Alaska, we also own and operate the Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center (CAIHC) in Fairbanks - making us the second largest healthcare provider in the city. TCC is currently in the process of expanding our health services to include urgent care, hematology, oncology, outpatient specialty clinics and an ambulatory surgery center and we are seeking qualified candidates to join our team.

The Lead Medical Social Worker is a key member of the multidisciplinary health care team working to ensure that the psychosocial needs of TCC patients are met in order to achieve and maintain optimal health and wellbeing throughout the lifespan. The job incumbent provides leadership in medical social work program design and oversight, as well as direct care interventions to support patients and their families during recovery from or adjustment to health disruptions. The Lead Medical Social Worker manages a social work staff that is embedded in the primary care teams to ensure that needed social services and resources are applied both at the point of care and in long term follow up until psychosocial needs are met. Working with the primary care team social work staff this position provides psychosocial support, case management, patient education, and referrals and assistance with access for other outside resources. The Lead Medical Social Worker participates in strategic planning, program development, and quality improvement projects with TCC Clinical Services leadership and serves as a subject matter expert providing insight and recommendations for best practices in the delivery of social work services.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Master’s Degree in social work or a related field.
  2. Preference for managerial experience providing either direct employee supervision or oversight of professional practice.
  3. Five or more years of professional practice in a bachelor’s level social work position or higher, with preference for experience in a medical setting.
  4. Experience working in a tribal health organization preferred.
  5. Knowledge of government and community resources such as Medicare, Medicaid, General Relief, long-term care, or any other applicable resources/services.
  6. Must be able to pass a background check pursuant to federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirement.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Aptitude for and interest in constant improvement of the customer experience.
  2. Excellent computer, analytical, and research skills. Advanced proficiency with MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Ability to learn new software & hardware systems efficiently.
  3. Demonstrated critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, human relations skills, and effective time management skills.
  4. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  5. Ability to multitask and operate within a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  6. A commitment to the values of the organization while demonstrating good judgment, flexibility, patience and discretion when dealing with confidential and sensitive matters.
