The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department is recruiting for a Sheriff's Health Services Administrator who is responsible for managing, coordinating, planning, and directing 24-hour healthcare services, including the administration of contracted services, delivered in all Sheriff's jail and corrections institutions and special programs. Additionally, the Health Services Administrator ensures the quality of healthcare services to inmates by multidisciplinary personnel; provides direction to ensure staff and department compliance with accreditation standards and pertinent state and federal regulations; negotiates, administers, and monitors all contracts that provide medical services for the institutions, including medical, dental, psychiatric, and pharmaceutical plans.

401(k) with 2 for 1 County match up to 8% of salary

The salary for this position may be supplemented by one of two lucrative benefits packages, which brings the total compensation value up to:

$202,742 with a Traditional Benefit Option
$213,532 with a Modified Benefit Option

  1. Successful candidates must not have been convicted of a felony and must pass a full background investigation, including a DOJ and fingerprint check and polygraph.
  2. Requires physical agility and mobility, hand dexterity, good vision and hearing, lifting and carrying of up to 10 pounds.
  3. Working conditions involve exposure to infectious materials.
  4. Travel throughout the county will be required. Incumbents are required to make provision for transportation. At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced for the individual providing the transportation.


EXPERIENCE: Four (4) years of experience as a health care administrator of a correctional facility -OR- an acute care hospital. Experience should include directing and managing personnel, medical staff, policy and procedures, medical laws, maintaining compliance and budgetary planning.

EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree in hospital, health, business, public administration, public health, or related field.

Applicants who possess an equivalent combination of qualifying education, experience and licensure/certifications may be given consideration.


A Master's degree and certification as a Certified Correctional Health Professional (CCHP) are highly desirable. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have:

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and methods of hospital correctional healthcare administration and management
  • Federal, state, and local health laws
  • Regulations and codes related to health programs and services provided to individuals detained at correctional facilities
  • Joint Commission and California Code of Regulations Title XV, XXII regulatory standards
  • General medical laws, rules and regulations of the State of California
  • Budgetary planning, financial management and fiscal control
  • Personnel management
  • Electronic medical records systems

Ability to:

  • Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate the overall activities of a large health services program provided at multiple Sheriff correctional facilities
  • Prepare, implement and control large budgets
  • Develop and deliver high quality and cost effective medical services to inmates
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with other agencies
  • Communicate effectively in oral and written form
