Responsible for coordinating the business, laboratory, and practice needs across the organization. The COO is often required to travel to meet with senior level management (Boards, CEO, CFO, CIO) at a variety of organizations including hospitals, pharmaceutical and insurance companies, information technology and various other organizations and companies related to the businesses within Mayo Collaborative Services (MCS). The COO is responsible for the overall performance of the Mayo Clinic Laboratories (MCL) intramural and extramural practice. The COO is responsible for helping to develop and overseeing all elements of the MCLI business plan including overall profit and loss, expenses, resource allocation, strategy development, project management and the reporting of metrics they are accountable for to the MCS Board of Directors. This individual is responsible for ensuring that the business is in compliance with all legal, regulatory and tax obligations. The COO is responsible for creating an environment that enables people to succeed, match skill sets to initiatives and tasks and ensures that the tools and technology are available to enable each employee within their business line to execute their areas of responsibility.

Minimum Education and/or Experience Required: (Education Requirements and Experience):

Bachelor's Degree in business, finance or related field is required. In addition, a master’s degree in Business Administration is required to be completed within 3 years of starting in the COO role, if it has not already been obtained. This position requires a minimum of eight to ten years of broad administrative/management experience, preferably in a clinical laboratory or healthcare related field. Must show a proven track record that includes managing the implementation of business plans in a fast-track manner within a complex market. It is essential to have excellent management skills and be able to communicate effectively both written and orally. The individual must possess excellent human relations skills to interact effectively with high level contacts within and outside of the organization. There must be a level of working knowledge in a broad range of areas relative to overseeing a business including finance, operations, marketing, sales, project management, and IT. The individual must be able to manage people and projects with deadlines simultaneously and delegate and exercise appropriate judgment when prioritizing projects. The individual must possess excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. They must possess the ability to communicate complex ideas to a range of executive types in a variety of settings. The individual must be comfortable making important decisions in the best interest of the Mayo organization and accept responsibility for the outcome. Experience with Joint Ventures and Acquisitions is preferred.
