Position description

The Director of Operations is responsible for directing, administering, and achieving the operational goals and objectives established by the senior leadership team. In addition to the strategic components, the director will be charged with leading the implementation and providing insight for new operational, quality, customer service and IT strategies that are required for compliance with applicable internal and external strategic partners such as the HLC, LCME, ACGME, and other agencies. The director is responsible for the development, implementation and coordination of all infrastructure related to the department or Education Shared Service unit(s). The director is responsible for establishing and meeting operational goals and expectations in line with the Education Shield strategic plan and institutional strategic priorities. S/he will be responsible for leadership and facilitation of operational improvement to achieve best of class functionality. The director works cooperatively with physician/scientist/Career Educator leaders, education administration, coordinators and other staff, students, learners and residents, education accounting/finance, legal, and other ancillary departments. Individual works cooperatively with representatives of the other schools and departments, federal and state agencies, as well as other academic organizations. Interacts with institutional and department/ division committees across all sites.

This position will report to the Administrator for the Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education (MCSGME). Responsible for the directing the development, strategic management, implementation, administrative leadership, and support of compliance for MCSGME, maintaining compliance with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Institutional and Program accreditation requirements and the requirements of other accrediting organizations. Develops and executes strategy directly supporting the Office of Program Accreditation Support (OPAS), Sponsoring Institutional Accreditation, Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER), Non-Standard Training (NST) Recognition for Sponsoring Institutions, and Sponsoring Institution-Based Fellowships.

This position performs enterprise school-wide high-level technical and analytical duties to assess education issues pertaining to ACGME, Institutional Review Committee, Review Committee, and Common Program Requirements and other accrediting organizations requirements, policies, and processes. Using discretion, initiative, and independent judgment, the Director prepares qualitative and quantitative data reports presented to the Dean, Designated Institutional Official (DIO), School Administrator, and Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) as requested to support governance and monitoring of institutional and program accreditation outcomes.

**Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Also, Mayo Clinic DOES NOT participate in the F-1 STEM OPT extension program.

This position is a combination of remote and onsite support work. Individual must live within driving distance to the Mayo Clinic Arizona, Jacksonville or Rochester campuses.


Master's degree in higher education, business administration, healthcare administration, communications/marketing or related field with at least 5 years of experience in education, healthcare administration, research, quality, customer service initiatives. Must have 3-5 years of business/operations management experience and demonstrated success in assuming increasing administrative and leadership responsibilities. Throughout the individual's career they will have experience that includes a combination of operations and strategic leadership. Must have demonstrated skills in financial/cost management, complex budgeting, and methods for improving operational efficiency. Must be proficient in the use of computers, Microsoft applications and databases. Good human relations, communication (written and oral) and organizational skills required.

Additional qualifications

The ideal candidate for the director position will possess the following: ability to manage and work collaboratively on a team, enthusiasm, customer-focused orientation, and strong consultative skills. In addition, the candidate will possess a demonstrated ability to think and perform strategically while delivering data-driven outcomes. Excellent planning, communication, decision-making, organizational management, and interpersonal skills in addressing administrators and division/department chairs within Education and Mayo Clinic are required. Be well-grounded in behavioral management techniques in addressing learner and faculty issues. Ability to consult effectively with multiple customers in a decentralized environment. Ability to perform external benchmarking to discern best practices in behavioral management. Expert at public speaking and presentations. Proven commitment to all aspects of relationship management with highest levels of customer service.

Ability to work both independently on complex projects and collaboratively on a team. Exercise of independent judgment is essential; strong negotiation skills are desired. Ability to effectively deliver outcomes within a budget by responsible use of resources. Experience in conflict resolution and issues management desired.

Expertise in institutional and program accreditation, and a record of experience in and successful management of teams is preferred.

Experience in medical education accreditation; and sufficiently knowledgeable experience in the graduate medical education accreditation environment is preferred.
