The Environmental Health Supervisor will organize and lead the operations and staff within select Environmental Health (EH) programs for the Public Health and Human Services Department. Implement policies and facilitate training to provide clear guidance to staff and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

Responsible for assigning, supervising, training, and evaluating the work performance of assigned staff.
Review progress and carry out changes in priorities and schedules to ensure services are provided in an efficient and timely manner. Serve as acting EH Manager when the Manager is unavailable.
Implement established policies, procedures, work rules, and performance standards to ensure the efficient and effective operation of assigned programs in compliance with county standards and federal, state, and local laws. Investigate and resolve personnel issues when appropriate.
Analyze data related to assigned programs; prepare reports, communicate effectively both orally and in writing to staff, EH Manager, Health Officer, and Director. Communicate with the public and represent the department in a variety of public settings locally, regionally, and state-wide.
Provide input to the EH Manager to review and assess assigned program budget. Evaluate staffing needs and time commitment relative to current fees and recommend changes to fees in response to changing regulations and community needs.
Coordinate assigned EH program activities with other County departments and outside governmental and community agencies and organizations. Maintain interagency cooperation with all regulatory agencies.
Provide leadership to assigned EH programs. Provide input to EH Manager for development of local plans and policies. Support County Boards and Committees by providing leadership, consultation, analysis, technical advice, and communication related to EH programs. Represent the department in the absence of the EH Manager.
Review permits and ensure program review and quality improvement in assigned programs.
Oversee enforcement activities for all applicable federal, state, and local rules pertaining to assigned EH programs as authorized. Implement and maintain data systems and records that provide proper evaluation, control, and documentation of assigned operations.
Support the EH Manager during EH emergency response to declared emergencies within the boundaries of Mason County. May be asked to assist with other public health emergency situations and train public health staff.
Direct the resolution of inquiries, complaints, problems, or emergencies affecting the availability or quality of services. Respond to sensitive or complex inquiries or service complaints.

Working Conditions

Work is performed both in an office environment and in the field requiring the employee to work in all weather conditions and at improved and unimproved building sites. Employees in this classification are required to be able to sit, stand, walk, bend, reach, and climb to accomplish their work tasks and are required to operate field and general office equipment including computers, adding and calculating machines, and camera, and may be required to move up to twenty (20) pounds on a routine basis and more than fifty (50) pounds periodically. Requires attendance at night meetings and fieldwork where the employee may be exposed to hazardous or contaminated materials. At times, will receive an emergency contact outside of work hours such as nights, weekends, and holidays to resolve an immediate issue of public health importance as part of the health department's 24-hour response team consisting of the Health Officer, Director, and all other managers and supervisors.
