The Tanana Chiefs Conference provides a wide array of services in multiple facilities with our main location being the Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center--an award winning cultural super clinic located in Fairbanks--Interior Alaska's urban hub. The Fairbanks based clinic is itself a hub that serves the larger mission of supporting health and wellness to Indian Health Service beneficiaries including an Ambulatory Surgery Center, Ophthalmology, Audiology, Urgent Care, Hematology/Oncology Services, Dental Clinic, Imaging and a host of other services.

The CRNA is a primary provider of anesthesia care, working in collaboration with surgeons and anesthesiologists to deliver anesthesia and sedation for surgical procedures. In addition, they must ensure that pre-anesthetic and post-anesthetic evaluations are complete and any abnormalities are reported to the surgeon. The CRNA is also responsible for maintaining a safe environment with appropriate equipment, medication and processes to ensure the highest quality in the delivery of patient care.

Providers will administer sedation, general anesthesia and regional blocks in an ASC setting for a variety of surgical procedures, including but not limited to General Surgery, Orthopedics, Gynecology, ENT, Podiatry, Urology, Dentistry, and Ophthalmology. Job duties will be located in the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) associated with and adjacent to the Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center operated by the Tanana Chiefs Conference (TCC) - a consortium of Interior Alaska Native tribes.

Essential Functions: This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbent(s).

Representative Duties: Under the direct supervision of Specialty Services Medical Director, the CRNA will:

  1. Perform the pre-anesthesia evaluation.
  2. Order appropriate pre-anesthetic medications.
  3. Plan the anesthetic management, including the selection of the anesthetic agent and techniques.
  4. Be available for consultation by surgical staff regarding patient care.
  5. Document discussion of the anesthesia plan and risks with the patients.
  6. Administer anesthesia for any surgical, diagnostic, or therapeutic procedures performed.
  7. Provide airway management.
  8. Place and manage regional anesthetic blocks.
  9. Maintain anesthesia at the required levels throughout the procedure.
  10. Ensure all emergency equipment is in proper working order.
  11. Utilize appropriate monitoring equipment.
  12. Recognize and take corrective action for abnormal patient responses to the anesthetic agents or any adjunctive medication or other therapy.
  13. Provide professional observations and resuscitative care until the patient has regained control of their vital functions, including the ordering of medications necessary in the recovery period.
  14. Perform the post-anesthetic evaluation and consult with the surgeon concerning any abnormal conditions discovered during the pre-anesthetic evaluation, and any abnormal patient conditions arising during the anesthetic or during the recovery period.
  15. Obtain awareness and ensure compliance with all IHS and AAAHC standards associated with the provision of anesthesia services.

Other Responsibilities:1. Perform other job duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Graduation from an accredited CRNA training program and achievement of a passing score on the National Certification exam.
  2. Participation in a program of maintenance of certification.
  3. Must be able to meet all guidelines necessary to become credentialed and privileged as a member of the TCC Clinical Staff.
  4. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) shall be currently licensed (or qualified to pursue licensure) as a registered nurse and as a nurse anesthetist by the state of Alaska.
  5. Knowledge of a range of surgical procedures to be able to anticipate the needs of the surgeon including safe positioning of patients.
  6. Demonstration of recent relevant experience is preferred but recent graduates will be considered.
  7. Acceptable malpractice history.
  8. Current ACLS and PALS certification.
  9. Current DEA registration certificate for prescribing authority.
  10. Must pass background check pursuant to federal Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act requirements.

Supervision: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Physical demands: Work is primarily at Chief Andrew Isaac Health Center. Position requires recurring bending, stooping, kneeling, stretching, and reaching.
